Start Your Crypto Journey Securely

Welcome to Ledger.com/start. You are taking the first step towards true financial ownership. Follow this guide to set up your device, install Ledger Live, and secure your digital assets with the industry standard in cold storage.

Ledger Hardware Wallet

Why Hardware Wallets Matter

In the rapidly evolving world of cryptocurrency, security is not just a feature—it's a necessity. Unlike software wallets (hot wallets) that are constantly connected to the internet and vulnerable to hacks,Ledger hardware wallets store your private keys offline in a secure element chip.

By using a Ledger device, you ensure that your critical data never leaves the device. Even when connected to a compromised computer, your assets remain safe because every transaction requires physical confirmation on the device itself. This concept, known as cold storage, is the gold standard for protecting Bitcoin, Ethereum, and thousands of other digital assets.

How to Set Up Your Ledger

Follow these 5 simple steps to initialize your device and start managing your crypto.

01

Unbox and Connect

Open your Ledger box. You should find the device, a USB cable, and recovery sheets. Connect the device to your computer or smartphone using the USB cable. The device will turn on and display a welcome message.

Tip: Always check that the recovery sheets are blank. If they already have words on them, do not use the device and contact support immediately.
02

Install Ledger Live

Go to ledger.com/start on your browser to download the official Ledger Live application. This app is the interface you will use to manage your accounts and update your device. It is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android.

03

Initialize & Set PIN

Follow the instructions on the device screen. You will be asked to set up a PIN code. This code unlocks your device for daily use. Choose a PIN that is hard to guess but easy for you to remember. You can choose between 4 to 8 digits.

04

Write Down Recovery Phrase

This is the most critical step. Your Ledger will display a series of 24 words. Write them down exactly as they appear on the recovery sheet. This 24-word phrase is the only way to restore your funds if your device is lost, stolen, or broken.

  • Never store your recovery phrase digitally (no photos, no cloud storage).
  • Never share your 24 words with anyone, including Ledger support.
05

Install Apps & Manage Assets

Once initialized, open Ledger Live and complete the security checklist. Use the "Manager" tab to install apps for the cryptocurrencies you want to hold (e.g., Bitcoin app, Ethereum app). You can then create accounts and start receiving funds securely.
